Smederevo Fortress 1

Smederevo Fortress

The Smederevo fortress is one of the largest medieval fortifications in Europe and the former capital of the Serbian despotism. Massive ramparts and towers testify to its military, political and strategic importance.

Experience and impressions

During the tour, you pass through the areas of the former 'Great City' and the Small City, where the residence of the despot Đurđ Branković and the palace buildings were located.

A walk along the ramparts offers a view of the Danube and the surrounding area, and the size of the walls clearly shows why the fortress was a key point of defense of the state during the period of Ottoman pressure.
